🎓 Outstanding Bachelor’s Thesis Defense
On Monday, July 20, 2026, my student Juan Cobeña Lérida successfully defended his Bachelor’s Thesis titled “Hierarchical Edge-Cloud IoT Architecture for Industrial Predictive Maintenance”. His work received an Outstanding (10/10) grade with a nomination for Honors (Matrícula de Honor) from the evaluation committee.
The project addresses the key limitations of traditional monolithic, sensor-to-cloud IoT models in Industry 4.0 environments, which often suffer from network saturation and high latency due to massive streams of high-frequency industrial data. Juan designed and implemented a scalable, three-tier hierarchical architecture (Data, Edge, and Cloud) that intelligently distributes processing tasks between local edge gateways and cloud infrastructure.
His core technical contribution is a dual-tier analytics workflow. At the local level, edge gateways run a sliding-window pre-processing pipeline, perform rate-of-rise thermal checks based on the UNE-EN 54-5 standard, and execute immediate anomaly detection using an Isolation Forest algorithm coupled with an adaptive sampling mechanism to drastically reduce bandwidth consumption. On the cloud side, the system manages time-series data persistence via InfluxDB, monitors concept drift with Half-Space Trees, and estimates Remaining Useful Life (RUL) using LightGBM.
The platform integrates MLflow for experiment tracking and automated model re-training, enabling zero-downtime hot-swapping of edge anomaly detectors. The entire solution was rigorously validated following international software engineering standards, specifically IEEE 1012-2024 and ISO/IEC TR 29119-11.
Juan’s project demonstrates how edge-cloud continuum strategies can be effectively harnessed to build resilient, real-time industrial monitoring systems, bridging the gap between raw field telemetry and actionable predictive maintenance.
This outstanding result reflects his technical maturity, dedication, and exceptional engineering skills, marking a solid step forward toward his professional career in telecommunications, IoT, and data engineering.
